Types of Exams & Consultations Available

Comprehensive Eye Health and Vision Examination

This is the basis for all patients who are being seen for their initial or routine examination with Christina. It will take up to 1 hour and may cover:
  • Unaided vision at distance and near 
  • Aided vision at distance and near
  • Pupil reactions
  • Eye muscle alignment 
  • How well your eyes can turn in
  • How well your eyes can coordinate
  • How well your eyes can work together at the same time
  • Internal  (inside and back of the eye) examination
  • Grading of the clarity of the lens in your eyes (reduced clarity of the lens is cataract)
  • Grading of your optic nerves size, rims colour for health and a baseline measure (glaucoma is the most common condition detected by changing appearance of the optic nerve).
  • Grading of the retinal vasculature for aging and hypertensive changes. – hemorrhages in your retina do not hurt and you cannot see them yourself. 
  • Appearance of your maculae
  • Amsler assessment (screening for wet AMD changes) 
  • Internal eye pressure
  • External (front of the eye)
  • Grading of the anterior drainage angle of your eye for risk of ACG
  • Clarity of your corneas – scars, infections, arcus ( if <50 indicates elevated cholesterol levels)
  • Health of eye lid margins grading of inflammatory conditions such as MGD or blepharitis
  • Removal of  ingrown lashes
  • Assessment of your tear film
  • Assessment of eyes lids for allergy signs
  • Appearance of your iris 
  • Appearance of your eyelids and conjunctiva for any lesions/ lumps/ bumps / pigmented spots.
  • Assessment of the integrity of your visual pathways
  • Colour vision
  • Visual fields

Glaucoma Nerve Fibre Laser Screening

This is performed using a Ziess Glaucoma Dx Laser Scanner and with take up to 15 minutes. It helps in detecting Glaucoma much earlier than conventional methods and allows treatment to commence earlier.

It will be recommended if:
  • You are >40 and have not had one in that past 2 years
  • Your optic nerve appears suspicious for glaucoma
  • Your eye pressure is elevated or uneven
  • You have a family history of glaucoma

Glaucoma Nerve Fibre Laser Threshold Analysis

This will be performed if your results during the Glaucoma Nerve Fibre Laser Screening are outside the normal range for your age and ethnicity. It is used to gather more detailed information which is used in the decision making process when arranging your ongoing care.

Visual Field Analysis

This analysis is used to asses your visual pathways and will take up to half and hour. It is best done in the morning or a time when you are not tired as a good level of concentration needs to be maintained. It will be recommended if:
  • Your optic nerve appears unhealthy
  • You have had a stroke
  • Further investigate unexplained reduced vision
  • Further investigate visual disturbances
  • If you are taking medication that can have a toxic side affects on your eyes
  • For a baseline measurement if you have a family history of optic nerve problems or glaucoma
