Examination of the Eye

It is recommended that people should have a periodic and thorough eye examination as part of routine primary care, especially since many eye diseases are asymptomatic.
Eye examinations may detect potentially treatable blinding eye diseases, ocular manifestations of systemic disease, or signs of tumors or other anomalies of the brain.
Measuring your visual acuity (how well you see) is just one of the many tests complex test that will be carried out during your examination

How often should I have my eyes examined?

Although there are some general guide lines as to the frequency that you should see your Optometrist, there are several crucial factors that will help determine your personal care:
  • Your age
  • If you wear contact lenses
  • If you smoke
  • Health conditions (i.e. diabetes, hypertension)
  • Your risk of eye disease based on family history
  • How well you are seeing
  • How healthy the structure of your eyes are
  • If you take prescription or non prescription drugs with ocular side affects
